Week 14 - Online Special Education

Monday:
Help your child to identifying the letters of their first name on a keyboard and use their index fingers to type their first name with as much guidance as necessary.
Modification: practice using appropriate keys with fingers starting on, and returning to, the home row.
Modification: practice locating and typing just the first letter of the first name. Ex. "Find J. Tap J."
If you find that your child is holding the key down to create a series of one letter, practice "tapping" keys. Put your index finger under your child's finger so that you are able to lift his/her finger and say "tap" after each letter. For instance, "Tap A." Let your child's finger down long enough to tap A and then say "tap" as the child taps A. This will help pair the word "tap" with pushing the key and letting go immediately.

Thursday:
Pop a hole that's just smaller than the size of a cotton ball into the top of box (shoe boxes are great for this). Have your child place a cotton ball onto the hole and use each finger to push the cotton balls into the holes. For more of a challenge, stand the box up so that the holes are on the side of the box.
Friday:

Daily: Practice counting by 1s to 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.
Daily: Count various items around the house (ex. rocks, spoons, cotton balls, etc.)

Practice reading and identifying each word below.
PRINT lined paper for written work.
Write the words on index cards and spread them out. Ask your child to identify each card by name. Ex. "Cat." Touch "cat."
Go over and review the index cards from previous weeks.
Modification: students who have a difficult time with writing, write words out on index cards and cut the letters into strips. Scramble up the letters and ask your child to spell the given word.
Modification: have an index card with the word written out to use as a model.
Modification: hand-over-hand to assist with spelling, or have your child place the letter strip over the letter on the written model.
For students who can write, practice writing and tracing these words each day this week.
Review these past words:
