A stroll away from the main strip in Port Jefferson landed me in front of a crisp white house decked out with modern Americana charm. The outside area has a small pond that's home to a few ducks, and a couple of extra-large Adirondack chairs. Add in the lush greenery and stringed lights, and I wanted to grab an iced tea as I lounge on a porch swing. To tell you the truth, I hung out by the pond for awhile before even heading in. Ducklings are captivating.
Inside I'm greeted by a friendly hostess and a framed skull picture with the words "Humble Pie" near a bin of red potatoes. Interesting. The vibe is rustic, sexy, modern and all-American - a perfect blend.
A team of people seem to be covering our section, and they are on it. My drink order is a Ron Jovi's Key Lime Martini: vanilla vodka, spiced rum, midori, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and lime. I daydream about that combination of flavors until a gorgeous yellow drink in a martini glass appears. One sip and I'm silently praising the mixologist who shook this to perfection.
A riddle on wall gets our party talking: "Peel my outside, cook my inside. Eat my outside, throw away my inside." We stew on this while diving in to the most flavorful appetizers: Grilled Flatbread, and Citrus Braised Pork Tacos. Both are delicious, but the tacos are mind-blowing. Starters like these are what amp up the meal. If the apps are this good, what's the entree going to be like? Moreover, what in the world is the answer to the riddle?
As soon as my entree touches down I'm thrilled. I went with The Davey Gravey, which is a beef patty between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Pure joy is the feeling you get when a burger with a grilled cheese sandwich bun is placed in front of you. The patty is perfectly cooked and each bite is complimented by two American classics. If you want to stick to a great cheeseburger, I've got what you need right here. It's called The Greenlawn Burger: bacon, cheddar and onion straws piled high on a toasted sesame seed bun. Nothing wrong with that! Have you figured out the riddle yet?
I didn't come this far into the world of Old Fields to call it quits here. Time for dessert! What do you do when you can't choose just one? You get two, obviously. The S'mores Brownie Sundae and Warm Bread Pudding a La Mode are heaven. Picking a favorite would be like picking a favorite child. It's just not possible. The S'mores Brownie Sundae is wonderfully dense. It's filled with a hot fudge brownie, graham crackers, toasted marshmallow, and vanilla bean ice cream. The Warm Bread Pudding a La Mode is buttery with walnuts and whiskey caramel that, when paired with the ice cream, makes for such a decadent dessert.
It goes without saying that I left Old Fields a huge fan. Until I return, I'll think back fondly to the plates set before me and take satisfaction in knowing...the answer to the riddle. Ha!
