Salt Haven | Salt Room Therapy

Let me start by saying that I think I’m literally allergic to healthy stuff.  That’s a lie.  Ok, but let’s just say that if some very brilliant doctor said to me, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but you’re allergic to healthy stuff.”  My mind wouldn’t be blown.  Running, for instance, is 100% not for me.  One day in my adult life, I thought that I should be a runner.  I was inspired by something I saw on Pinterest, which is usually to blame for many of my bright ideas.  Anyway, I bought running shoes, a whole outfit, signed one of my daughter’s up to keep me accountable, and then set off down the street.  Round trip, it was a ten block job and I came back defeated by my (potential) allergy to healthy stuff.  A few  puffs on my inhaler  later, and I was lost in thought about how I would immediately replace running with yoga.  The pants are super comfy, which is already a bonus.  Don’t get me started on how my friend basically threatened me with this thing called “hot yoga.”  It sounds like Hell.  Literal Hell.

Now, let’s fast forward to me looking for things to do with Vinnie.  I considered a dance class, cheese tastings, and a boat tour.  Vinnie was at the backend of a man-cold, so I didn’t want to overwhelm him or sign us up for something that would take hours.  I love you, Vinnie,  but I can’t handle you when you’re sick.  It’s too much.  Then I found it!  Salt Haven, Inc. in Bayport offers Adult sessions!

From their site: “Dry Salt Therapy is very beneficial for overall general wellness by removing the toxicity from the respiratory system. Salt Therapy influences cell activity, energy and blood sugar levels. Dry salt air is more powerful than wet air, allowing the healing salts to penetrate faster.  Halotherapy is an excellent way to cleanse and detox the lungs as well as invigorate the whole body with increased lung capacity and oxygen intake.”

Wait, wait.  Wait.  All I have to do is sit in a zero gravity chair in room full of Himalayan salt, and it’s healthy?  Um, yeah, you can go ahead a put my name on the list.  On the day of our visit, we walked up the path and into the lobby where we were greeted, signed in and given sterile booties to put on in place of our shoes.  We were lead past a room for kids, and I made a mental note to bring my girls for a session.  It’s so cute, because it’s set up as a play area.  It’s basically like sneaking vegetable into your child’s food: they’re doing something good for themselves and they don’t even know it.  Past that room is a room where we left our things, including our cellphones.  Yes, I understand that cellphones interfere with relaxation and the negative ions in the controlled room, but I felt like I was leaving my baby on a shelf.  I pried my phone from my hand and thought about how I really need to learn to be without electronics.  I also scolded myself for being questioning whether I’d even be able to relax in the salt room without my stuff.  Dependency on electronics is really so annoying.

There are a few things to note:

  1. You’re asked to come a few minutes early to get all set for your session.

  2. You get to keep your clothes on with the exception of your shoes.

  3. Other parties can be in the salt room during your session, but you can opt for a private booth for a more intense session.

  4. Session are less than 30 minutes, but you’re encouraged to stay for a while after.

  5. We were told that it’s common for people to get runny noses or cough while in session.  This didn’t happen to us, but there were tissues located around the room.

  6. You’ll pick up on the slight taste of salt, but it’s not overwhelming.  Think of what it’s like at the beach.

  7. We were told that it may get foggy in the room, from the salt being released into the air, but we didn’t notice any fog.

  8. Talking is discouraged if there are others who are not in your party present – it’s just nice to be courteous.

  9. Drink water when you’re done to combat any dehydration from the salt.

Just before stepping in, some dry pharmaceutical grade salt is scooped into a machine that heats it up and grinds it into micro-particles. The machine then releases the salt into the room, and visitors inhale the salty air, which obviously head to your lungs.  Soft, relaxing music plays in the dim room, and the sound of the machine whirs periodically while it adds salt to the room.  You’ll know when your session is over when the machine stops whirring.  At that point, you can leave or hang out for a while.

Just as I was about to nod off, the machine stopped, and was a little disappointed that the session was over!  After the first couple of minutes, I didn’t miss my phone or anything else at all!  I was just so thoroughly relaxed!  I can’t tell you if I saw any improvements to my health directly after my visit, because, as with any treatment, we were advised that best results come from regular visits. On the other hand, the mental break that this session gave me was worth every minute.  When we left the salt room, and collected our things, I noticed that I was covered in fine particles of salt that were very visible.  I felt like a doll that had been collecting dust on a shelf – a very relaxed, dusty doll.  Just like my cares, worries and dependency on my cellphone, I decided to just shake it off.

Thanks, Salt Haven, for giving us some much needed downtime.  It was a wonderful experience!
